Eric Dahlberg and Sandi Martinez Debate for 3rd Middlesex Senate District

Sandi Martinez and Eric Dahlberg are running for the Republican nomination for the 3rd Middlesex Senate District. Third Middlesex includes Waltham, Bedford, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Concord, Lexington and parts of Lincoln, Sudbury, and Weston. This district has been trending more Republican in the last few years and Rep. Susan Fargo is vulnerable. This debate was sponsored by the Lowell Sun.

In the debate there is an exchange between Dahlberg and Martinez about a controversy in Chelmsford where Dahlberg recused himself from a controversial vote because one of the parties had once held a fundraiser for Dahlberg. Dahlberg comes off as a real straight arrow. A welcome change from certain legislators who blithely deny all conflicts of interest.

The two candidates try to out-do each other on tax cutting credentials. The debate goes into a lot of detail on a huge number of issues. Both of these candidates are very well informed and willing to get into specifics.

One of the key policy differences between these two candidates is on health care. Martinez would repeal the recent health care reform. Dahlberg would reform it, but would not repeal it. Both speak in detail about their portin of view.

Martinez speaks really well about the state becoming too intrusive. She actually used the term “nanny state”.

As a practical matter Dahlberg is leading in this race and is perceived as the one most able to challenge Rep. Susan Fargo.
