10th – Perry Malone Keating

10th Congressional – Bill Delahunt, Jeff Perry, Robert O’Leary, William Keating, Joe Malone

The Boston Herald reported yesterday that State Senator and 10th Congressional candidate Robert O’Leary is collecting pay for 3 simultaneous state jobs:

  • $76,030 in Senate pay;
  • $30,768 for teaching at Massachusetts Maritime Academy;
  • $2,922 for teaching part-time at Cape Cod Community College.

His primary opponent Bill Keating wasted no time in criticizing O’Leary in a taped debate on NECN.

Perry and Malone come off as the clearest speakers. Perry is coming off of yet another attack piece in the Globe. Malone goes after Perry pretty hard on the strip search issue, and on some questionable speeding tickets he issued in 1987. Perry’s defense sounded a little nervous, and refuses to go after Malone on his own record as Treasurer, where one of his subordinates went to jail for theft and some unpaid small business taxes.

O’Leary won’t disclose, Perry’s momentum killer poll

In the race to succeed William Delahunt in the Massachusetts 10th congressional district three of the four major candidates have released polling data of questionable validity and none have complied with minimal disclosure standards established by the polling industry to verify the legitimacy of the data.

So could these polls be more press release than valid survey research project?

If so, the victims of that unethical behavior are the very voters the candidates wish to court.

Why do media outlets fail to request the most basic information to support statistical validity?  Multiple resources exist for media outlets, pollsters and candidates including a disclosure checklist developed by American Association of Public Opinion Research (AAPOR).

Gary Lowell

Gary Lowell, a candidate for the 3rd Norfolk Representative District, sent us the following message:

William R. Keating is running against Robert A. O’Leary for the Democratic nomination for Massachusetts’s 10th Congressional District. The only problem for Keating when deciding whether to run for the seat was that he did not actually live in the 10th district.

The current holder of the seat, William D. Delahunt, decided not to run for reelection this year. Even though Keating lived in the Fourth Congressional District, he decided to move to Quincy so that he would be eligible to run for the 10th seat.

William Delahunt

Candidates are tripping over themselves to run for Bill Delahunt’s 10th Congressional district.

CQPolitics has an interesting analysis :

The race to succeed Rep. Bill Delahunt (D-Mass.) looks likely to come down to four men, a pair of Republicans and a pair of Democrats who have all summer to fight it out for their parties’ nominations.

State Sen. Robert O’Leary (D) told CQ-Roll Call Monday he is definitely in the race and plans to open up a bank account and set up a campaign committee this week. A formal announcement will probably come the following week, he said.

O’Leary’s primary competition for the seat is likely to be District Attorney William Keating, whose spokesman told local press outlets over the weekend that he is also running and will make an announcement in the coming days. Read the rest of this entry »
