Patricia Mosca Running for Governor’s Council

Patricia Mosca is one of the candidates running for Governor’s Council 1st District. This is one of the open seats, in this case vacated by long time councillor Carole Fiola. She joins a crowded field with 7 candidates at last count.

In our article about the current Governor’s Council candidates, we didn’t write much about her because our research did not turn up a lot of information. Ms. Mosca has written to give us more information about her candidacy. Her message to the blog is included below:

Hi, my name is Patricia Mosca and I am one of the candidates for Governor’s Council.

I decided to run for Governor’s Council when the incumbent dropped out of the race.  I do not have many $ nor do I have the name, as you mention is important.  But, I do have the experience.

I am a retired Probation Officer, and as such, I had to appear before judges to request my defendents be released from Probation up to my defendent not being a good Probation candidate and should be committed or incarcerated.  I met with judges on a one to one basis to request certain things like a waiver of fees. Our offices are in the court house, so I worked on a day to day basis in the same building.  I knew them, also, as co-workers when we had retirement parties, etc.

We all hope we will never have to be a before a judge, but it can happen without our expecting it, even by mistake or accident as a plaintiff or defendent.  Judges influence each and every one of us because their decisions influence the safety of our community.  It is not something to be taken for granted.  We were lucky in the Plymouth District Court to have good judges, but I have experienced judges more interested in their own ego, than the the whole picture.  As a Social Worker I knew how a judges decision could influence the lives of a family and how important the right decision is.  Do you think that if a person is incarcerated and a family is left behind it does not influence you.  It does because that family now needs another form of support if the defendent was the main source and that can mean public assistance, it can mean counceling for the family, etc.  Making the right decision is so important and should not depend on the ego of the person making the decision or personal problems.  Once a judge is appointed they are pretty much a judge until they decide to leave or they reach retirement age.

My credentials besides my work history?  I have a Bachelor of Science in Education with a minor in Sociology and Art.  I have taken certification courses and masters courses relating to my jobs and life skills.  I have taken many courses offered by my employer from computer to crisis intervention and interviewing skills.

Volunteer and Community Service?  I was a Girl Scout leader, 4H leader, and superintendent of Youth Exhibits at our local Barnstable County Fair, member of the Band mothers of Bourne High School and Pigskin Club.  I voluntered with Local Girl’s youth Softball, Swish Basketball, boy scouts, Lions Club, Eagles, the Cape Cod Baseball League, and served as chair of the vendors at St. George Greek Orthodox Church Festival in Centerville for 2 years.  I served on a committee to hire the Assistant Superintendent of Bourne Schools, and ran many Craft fairs and events for various charities.  I am or have been a member of the Daughters of Penelope, Cape Cod Art Association, and Falmouth Art Association.

I am presently State Committee Representative to the 9th District, Senate President Therese Murray’s distict.

I have two children, one is a professional graphic artist and the other is beginning his practice as a criminal lawyer.

I feel it is important for the people to know what is going on in  the Governor’s Council and be aware of the candidates being put up for appointment.  I answer to you the people of the District!
