Deval Patrick “Priceless” Ad – Mass GOP Launches a new Attack Ad

YouTube Preview ImageThe Republican National Committee has launched a new – pretty effective – attack ad against Deval Patrick. Its a riff on the classic “Visa Priceless” ads that have become an internet idiom.

Republicans have been almost paranoid in their expectation that the Democrats would go negative in the gubernatorial race. This ad serves a double purpose – it is in itself an attack ad – but it also serves to warn the public to expect attack ads from the Patrick campaign in an effort to pre-emptively neutralize them.

A few months ago the Baker campaign leaked a memo that anticipated attack ads from the Democratic side. It is ironic that it has been Republican sources – the RGA and the Mass GOP that have gone negative in a big way and very early.

They are following a smart strategy of using out of state Republican resources for the attack ads, keeping Baker’s hands clean.

A few days ago the DNC gave Republicans a gift when they announced that they were planning on spending a staggering $50 million to support Patrick. The Mass GOP has been able to spin this into a promise of huge negative ad campaign – but the DNC hasn’t said anything about the tone of the ads. The Mass GOP took just a few days to work that comment into an ad.

Note to the DNC: Play your cards a little closer to the chest.

So far the Patrick campaign has not been looking too worried. No major ad campaigns so far. They tout their position at the top of every poll, and good recent economic numbers. It’s as if they are taking a 35% base of Democractic voters for granted.

Polls have so far borne that out, and if it stays that way Patrick could try to run a mostly positive campaign using these early Republican attacks against them.

If we see a significant drop in Patrick’s poll numbers, this race will get much much uglier.
